OWENS Family Notes

Submitted by Jim (MacRorieJA@aol.com), April 2003

John Owens (one of my ggggg-grandfathers) was born in 1766 in Ireland, parents and location unknown to me. His wife Nancy Barr Owens was born in 1770 in Pennsylvania to Andrew Barr and Jane Hamilton Barr. Andrew Barr had come to the US from Ireland with his father William Barr with 4 brothers and 2 sisters. He was a Revolutionary War veteran in the Pennsylvania Militia.

John & Nancy were married somewhere in Virginia in the 1790's and moved to Fairfield County, Ohio in 1804 to join Nancy's father and 4 brothers. They purchased land and moved to Richland County, Ohio in 1814.

All of the Owens in the older section of Mount Olivet Cemetery are their children, except for several grandchildren.

Grandchildren:

The Smiths moved from Sussex County, Delaware to Richland County, Ohio around 1814. Margaret Neal Smith's brother, Henry Neal, married another one of the Owens daughters, Janet Owens (a set of my gggg-grandparents). They're buried just a few miles away in the Imhoff Cemetery in Ashland County, Ohio. The Houstons were also part of the group from Delaware.

Hester Dunlap Barr is the wife of Richard Barr. He's not a brother of Nancy Barr Owens but may be related. Their son Robert married Mary Owens (daughter of Nancy Barr Owens), and another son married Mary Neal, a granddaughter of Nancy Barr Owens.
